Crete

Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the 88th largest island in the world, and the 5th largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, after Sicily, Sardinia, Cyprus, and Corsica.

A melting pot of cultures from Europe, Asia, and Africa, Crete is where the first European civilization—the Minoan—thrived. Minoan remains and sites are found at Knossos (Knosós or Cnossus), Phaestus (Phaestos), and numerous other locations throughout the island.

The island is divided into 4 administrative regions or prefectures, running east to west across the island. These are better known as Lasithi (East Crete), Heraklion (Central Crete), Rethymnon and Chania (West Crete). It rests about 160 km south of the Greek mainland, and about 100 km southwest of Anatolia.

Crete provides exceptional cuisine.
